Ian Leake
Bio and Artist Statement
I seek to create beautiful expressive photographs of interesting people. I work almost exclusively with nudes because the body is deeply emotive, visually fascinating, and sumptuously beautiful; and I want to celebrate this. I work primarily with women for the same reasons.
I inherited my fascination with the visual arts from my mother, herself an accomplished artist, and it was she who gave me my first camera to take with me on holiday when I was eleven. Since then I’ve rarely been without a camera near to hand just in case I wanted to take a picture. But it was many, many years before I realised that I didn’t need to take pictures, because I could make them instead.
The change from “taking” to “making” may only be one letter, but for me it symbolises an approach to photography that seeks to create something where nothing existed before – something that frees our imagination – something that’s in harmony with the natural beauty of the people who surround us. And it’s the people around me who are my primary inspiration: the way we move, the small gestures that we make, and the way we relax say far more about our personality, moods and emotions than words ever can. These are the things that make us unique, and it’s these things that I try to include in my pictures. I am also inspired by great sculpture – Rodin, Degas and the Greco/Roman tradition have all informed my work.
I live and work in London, England. All my photographs are made by hand using traditional processes: large wooden film cameras which would have been familiar to a Victorian photographer, and platinum prints made on the finest paper available.
