Guidelines for New Members

“Photography is only a new road from a different direction, but moving toward the common goal, which is Life.” Paul Strand made this statement in 1917, and it still resonates today, especially with Paula Chamlee’s IN FOCUS article this month. We have a chance to see what inspires her to explore Life.In the “Photographers’ Outings” article this month, John Wimberley shares an image and some insight about visiting special locations as he discusses his approach to “place.”

We are so happy to have the opportunity to interact with everyone through the various shows and workshops we are offering. Please check the schedule below for the latest additions to our schedule of events. And if your travels ever take you near one of our members, be sure to stop and introduce yourself. Just as we are committed to making the finest possible prints, we all would love to show you what we are up to.

IN FOCUS with Paula Chamlee

Paula Iceland Rock I was asked not long ago, “Where are you going with your work?” I replied, “I don't know.” Though the answer seemed quite sufficient at the time, I later continued to ponder the question.

I know that one thing always leads to the next, and usually that is quite unpredictable. If I try to let go of any preconceptions about where that next step should be, then I have a chance at moving forward, and the goal is to move forward. Since the possibilities are endless, I can only hope to stay awake to the surprises and revelations that may occur. I rarely know exactly what stimulates new growth in my work because it is a culmination of everything I encounter, and often comes from many different and unexpected places.

There is so much to see and investigate and learn in the world, so I must choose those things for which I have the deepest feelings about and connections. And that leads to having trust in the most important guide—my intuition. Regardless of the subject of a photograph, there must be, for me, that intangible, transcendent, magical quality—one that comes as a result of everything I know and feel at the moment of exposure. All of who I am, and all of what I feel about the subject, is being realized in that instant.

There is an intensity in the act of making the picture, and hopefully an intensity on the part of the viewer, because they complete the circle in the process of creating the work. I believe there is a vital collaboration between the artist and the viewer. It is not my intention to direct the viewer in how they should see my photographs. I know that their visual perceptions are charged with their own life experiences, which might be much fuller and more sensitized than I could imagine. If a viewer gets something of value and pleasure from my art, then that is a great gift for me as an artist.

The act of photographing intensifies my seeing and my being in the world. It is a very personal moment of contact, one in which I feel a deep and exciting “yes,” like falling in love.

Photographers' Outings

John_Bitter Ridge 181.2007 John Wimberley

John shares with us his latest photographic journey, which he undertook shortly after the beginning of the new year. “During early January, I photographed in an area north of Las Vegas, NV for two weeks, and returned with 75 new 5x7 negatives. I’ve been working in this vicinity on a series titled "Bitter Ridge," dedicated to the native peoples of North America who were decimated in disease epidemics after their first contacts with Europeans.

“During the trip I camped alone in 'Luna,' my four-wheel-drive van, and spent the days deepening my relationship with the area. My subject matter included landscapes, sandstone formations and petroglyphs. Some of these new images will be in my upcoming show at Ryerson University in Toronto.”

We’re including one of John’s images from this trip, which he has titled "Bitter Ridge #181, 2007." To see more of his work in our Store, please click here.
